Our Story

About the Founders — Didul & Nilanthi Gamage

Two lives. One calling. A story that began long before United Volunteer.

Didul Gamage began his career in technology in Sri Lanka before pursuing higher education at Canterbury Christ Church University in England, specialising in Forensic Computing. He has since built a career as an IT Consultant and qualified criminal investigation professional with expertise in cybercrime.

Nilanthi's journey has always been about people. She joined Asiana Education Development (AED) in 1998, where she helped support more than 7,000 children in their education and led numerous humanitarian initiatives across Sri Lanka.

Her resolve was tested most profoundly by the 2004 tsunami, through which she led AED in establishing two orphanages near Negombo — giving shelter and hope to children who had lost everything.

When AED closed in December 2013, Nilanthi felt a compelling call to continue her life's work. With Didul's unwavering support, the two founded United Volunteer in 2014 — growing it from a grassroots mission into an internationally connected organisation spanning three continents.

Today, United Volunteer reflects their combined strengths — Nilanthi's expertise in child welfare and financial management, and Didul's technological and investigative background — delivering ethical, impactful volunteer programmes across wildlife conservation, education, childcare, and community development.

Safety & Backup

At United Volunteer, we take your security seriously. We offer comprehensive support networks and dedicated management to ensure your safety is never compromised.

Constant Support Staff

Our staff regularly visit and monitor all volunteer accommodation and placements. On arrival, we perform a final check of your arrangements. During the first week, we maintain close contact to ensure satisfaction. We actively check on the status of every volunteer daily—either through direct contact or via the host family.

Placement Supervision

Our staff work closely with partner organizations to ensure they understand the program's purpose. Every volunteer, whether in teaching, medical, or conservation, is allocated a supervisor. This supervisor enables you to carry out work effectively and assists with any problems or concerns.

Accommodation Standards

Your safety and comfort are top priorities. We only accept accommodations that meet stringent criteria for cleanliness, hygiene, and comfort. We aim for host families to have basic English proficiency. Detailed records of each family are updated after regular inspection visits.

Arrival & Departure

We greet you at the airport or your designated arrival point. Our team (or approved chauffeur guides) will hold a sign with your name and carry proper identification. When concluding your placement, we assist you in returning to your international point of departure upon request.

Orientation & Induction

All volunteers receive an introduction to the country and local area. You will receive a Welcome Pack with details on local staff, maps, banks, hospitals, and transport. We advise on local customs to help you feel confident in your new environment.

Medical & Emergency

In case of unexpected health issues, our dedicated staff provides comprehensive assistance. From coordinating hospital arrangements to liaising with insurance providers, we ensure a seamless process so you receive the best care and comfort during recovery.
